November 2020 / love
Fain, dare, be furious,
rough, tender, liberal, elusive,
encouraged, mortal, deceased, alive,
loyal, traitor, cowardly and courageous...
This is “Love”, said Lope de Vega. And this is how the Zubizarreta sisters baptized their 2020 Christmas campaign. They did it with some photographs through which we walked loves of all kinds dressed in their wonderful clothes: mothers, daughters, mothers and daughters, lovers, friends, dog friends... the set was flooded of smiles, winks, insecurities and strengths, confessions and laughter. Like any day with the Zubis.
And the adventure began with a beautiful gesture of love ten years ago: Mercedes -Mer for those of us who like to sit very close to her and look at the ocean- gave her sister Elena a bag that was not content with storing things, but who counted them. This is how bags were born that begin infinite journeys because they do not show the way, but rather they feed the need to begin it and, of course, to enjoy it, to decipher it. Make bags without handles or departments a trend? Only someone who, at 20, made it fashionable in the Galician summers to wear leggings under midi skirts could achieve it. And he did it, of course.
And Mercedes dreams, flies, thinks big. Those of us who enjoy it know that while we contemplate it, it may be traveling far away; and that no matter how far it travels, it remains by our side. It could be a sparrow: it travels, it flies... and it returns with its innate sense of loyalty transmitting the most genuine of sparkles in its small, dark eyes. His friends already guessed then that a new adventure is about to set sail.
Meanwhile, the beautiful Elena turns Mercedes' flights into a tangible reality. His calculator and innate sense of business make possible the growth of a brand that, season after season, is reinterpreted and surprises. Her designs surprise until the day you see her combining them. That day you start to “need” them.
Since its creation, Zubi has shown love. Love for your land, your country. For the Zubizarretas, manufacturing in Spain and doing so under decent working conditions has been an inalienable value since its birth. They also chose the most depopulated Spain to do it, the one that deserves and needs the most help. And with that natural elegance that characterizes them, they enjoy everything they travel: Castilian wheat fields, Galician estuaries, Mediterranean islands or Californian houses. But their journey not only adds kilometers: in their tireless search, they look for beauty, vocation and a job well done and when they find it they bring it to us, sometimes in the form of episodes it is their podcast and other times of embroidery, of writings or flowers.
And, dear Lope...
This is love, whoever knew them knows it.
