Ep 84 / Chatting with María Fernández-Miranda about “non-motherhood”
“Well, what about you… when are the children coming? "If you take too long, you'll miss the rice."
How many women have they given us this third degree for free and without it being relevant? How many women have to listen to these types of questions under a judicious gaze?
In situations like this, I remember the actress Maribel Verdú stoically enduring questions of this style in many interviews that, by the way, were about her work, a film or theater premiere. "Sorry?"
Yes, woman and mother begin with M, but does one exist without the other? The answer is a resounding YES and we are talking about this today with a great woman and friend: María Fernández-Miranda.
María is a journalist, writer and lecturer. She has been deputy editor of Cosmopolitan magazine and her professional career has been linked to major international publications in the world of fashion and beauty. His passion for writing and telling stories led to his own when in 2017 he published his first book in essay form: “No Madres.” In its pages, María tells the path that led her to “non-motherhood” and the “acceptance process” that she needed during this transition. A process in which she herself needed to listen to other women who were in the same boat, women who for different reasons have not been able or have not wanted to have children.
“No mothers” gives voice and makes visible non-motherhood and the stories of well-known women who came through different paths such as Maribel Verdú, Paula Vázquez, Sandra Ibarra, Rosa Montero, Soledad Lorenzo, Mamen Mendizabal, Carmen Ruiz, Inka Marti, Almudena Fernández and Alaska. All with a common denominator: they are not mothers and they want no woman to have to explain this in the future. “No mothers” is not a book against motherhood, but in defense of freedom of choice.
In this podcast we chat with María about her path, which is also that of many women. A path that connected her (and she herself tells us the story) with one of her dreams: publishing a novel. María Fernández-Miranda published “The summer we returned to Alegranza” in 2021 and has started 2022 with a new project in the form of a podcast. We talk about all this and more in the podcast that you can now listen to on our website and on all platforms.
